Want To Be A Film Star?

Be part of musical history on Thursday April 1st @ 1:30 pm SLT

‘Pop Art Lab’-SL’s premier music venue is undergoing a massive change soon and will be unveiling a very cool new look. To help us remember our old sim design before we pack it in inventory forever, we have invited SL’s top film makers to come and capture the PAL that has been loved by over 25,000 music fans. The winning filmmaker will win a massive L$100,000 first prize announced at our epic relaunch weekend in mid April.

To help create a musical celebration on film, we are inviting SL residents to join us for a party on Thursday April 1st starting at 1:30pm SLT.

Please note: Various scenes/setups will be made during event according to whatever filmmakers ask us to do!

The lineup includes:
1:30 PM: DJ BRB (warm up)
2 PM: DJ Astrella Lane, Switzerland (funky/soulful house)
3 PM : MommaLuv Skytower, US (Live music). The high priestess of electronica in SL!)
4:00 PM: Lance Rembrandt, US (live music)
5:00 PM: DJ BRB

Wear your fancy stuff and come party! Click this SLurl for taxis!

12 days to go and submission deadline for our machinima contest ends. We have no clue about how many filmmakers will enter. What we do know is some very clever ones included but whether we get 5 films or 20 – blank!? By telling this we ofcourse encourage everyone to join the contest. The judge is very varied including a RL PHd who ain’t particular SL machinima expert but make serious research in topic from a professional point of view, Leska Linden who’ve been at LL 5+ years who have strong interests in machinima and Chantal Harvey of whom I expect know tons about technical issues creating machinimas and finally myself who’ll be absolutely noob and mostly only care about issues like “Does the machinima capture Pop Art Labs spirit”!

Somehow we would like being more involved in this contest so we might try set up some kind of events if any out there want to film the sim with audience in. We will inform on such steps by group notes, here on blog, on twitter etc.

Info on winner announcements and sim opening programme can be followed as it expands on an almost daily basis.

This weeks inspirational verse goes for  the Greg Hawkes concert recorded live at Pop Art Lab in December 2008 and of which was our very first feature on the machinima scene! Greg Hawkes is most known for handling the synths in the US major 70s-80s group The Cars!

Sit back and relax to this awesome ukulele led show!!!

The Pop Art Lab Machinima contest is rolling! Thanks to all who already showed interest and done recordings. We hope to announce the 3rd person/judge coming week. Also please post whatever you like in comments at the [Machinima Contest] header or email, IM your questions.

To those who are new to PAL and to try recover our common memory each week here will feature a new blogpost with news and reports from this ongoing process about the relaunch, contest etc.

Back in September 2008 Pop Art Lab had its official opening. It seems like ages ago but we had like 500 visitors during the weekend.  Linden Lab put us upfront in showcase section one hour before opening (back then music section had like 15 venues included today number is 81!). And ofcourse we also had a cool programme of live music and the now almost legendary “Murder on the Dancefloor” game provided by the über cool Mad Pea crew. Few days later I called in regular PAL goers and asked for help. Most are still frequently supporting PAL at events and I want to thank each tons. For those who want to dig further into our history visit old posts in archives here.

OK shifting gears now as we are currently filling up the programme for our “second” launch April 16. We have decided to schedule one part for the European timezone as well as one for the US.

We would like best artists and creativity to be included so feel free to drop us a line. By now 3-5 artists confirmed and will be aired during next week.

Programme so far:

April 16 European Opening
12:00 PM PST/SLT: Opening Ceremony w. guest speakers + visuals
1:00 PM: Highlights, screening of contest machinimas
1:30 PM: Announcement of the winner of machinima contest plus DJ
2:00 PM: Live music DJs and party
5:00 PM: End

April 16 US Opening
7:00 PM/SLT: Opening Ceremony w. guest speakers + visuals
8:00 PM: Highlights, screening of contest machinimas
8:30 PM: Announcement of the winner of machinima contest plus DJ
9:00 PM: Live music, DJs and party
12:00 AM: End

Inspirational verse this time goes to Chris Dreja who made amazing photographer work in the late sixties and to me known for his fabulous work with The Yardbirds. Check his site!

The re-launch of Pop Art Lab sim is set for April 16. Designs will be completely removed.
We hope machinima contest will help us save the history of our beloved immersive 3D space. April 9 the contest submission ends and PAL might be closed down till opening.

Previous weeks PAL supporters have told me they’ll be crying the day it’s gone. We are sorry! But as soon they see what to come we’re pretty sure the tears turn into lovely smiles.

When we opened back in 2008 I had no idea how PAL would evolve. First many months my counter read 75 visits a day and PAL wasn’t really set for this sudden growth. Due to lack of time we experienced a backclash during 2009 well summer and all that (most stats obsessed people forget RL weather have a huge impact on virtual living!). Anyway the lab kept rolling at daily snooze and huge traffic at events though. And now to the point. Pop Art Lab was never intended to be a traffic fueled club. Infact one of the main reasons I started the lab was I wanted a place to find peace inbetween the hectic, dramatic social Second Life. Maybe others felt same way or well they did and kept support us.
Lastly PAL as it looks now was originally scaled for a 6 parcel design. When we got our own sim we simply did the copy move till we felt ready for a full sim rollout.
OK. Time is up.
The new Pop Art Lab won’t tell ur eyes or make u feel u enter a club! Pop Art Lab is about music and a hybrid of many impressions and I think most designs inworld underestimate the importance of immersive impact. Well we partly did hence my club ramblings.

3-4 weeks to go and meanwhile I would love to hear ur comments on Pop Art Lab during its first few years of existence.

Found this wonderful video done by Jason Chen.

The End of Existence: A Tribute to the Flying Saucer Houses from Jason Chen on Vimeo.

The modern-looking UFO houses were actually built over 30 years ago. Originally developed as a vacation resort, but the building company was forced to stop the construction because of financial problems. This site was abandoned since.
Recently, the local authority announced that the demolition of these buildings has been planned. This desicion makes people coming to see this place for the last time.
