Metanomics Mixed Reality Broadcast on New Market Dynamics

When: Tuesday, June 8th, 11:00-12:00 am SLT

Where: Copenhagen/Second Life

Avatars for sale, gold-farming in WoW (World of Warcraft), purchase of virtual islands, leasing of towns, recruiting avatar employees, VW (virtual world) stock exchanges and banks, exchanging WoW gold to USD – it’s just some of the new designations for commercial agencies and business which have emerged in the wake of the development of virtual worlds. But what are the characteristics of these emerging economies? Who are they, the entrepreneurs of VWs? Are the many small agencies of user-driven innovations the driving force of the economies of VWs? Or, is it Big Business that survives and benefits from the new market dynamics? How has the user-driven content creation of Second Life contributed to the development of new business areas and market dynamics?
This Metanomics Mixed Reality Broadcast, hosted by Robert Bloomfield, will comprise a panel discussion between Robin Teigland, Edward Castronova, Tom Boellstorff and include streaming from the RL research workshop ‘Making Sense of Virtual Worlds and User Driven Innovation” in Copenhagen comprising 40 international participants and co-hosted RL by Sisse Siggaard Jensen.

Updates from the Lab – Holiday cancelled, Almost!

Categories: NewsTags: , , Author: Claus Uriza

After  busy April, partly May and back home from a very cool Metameets confrence in Dublin it’s about time for an update.

To those of you who are regular readers you will probably remember I declared summer holidays ahead in my last post. I barely finished that post before coming actions rolled in at high speed! Goodbye holiday but luckily all activities almost as refreshing and inspiring as holiday – to me at least!

Coming up!

May 31, 2 PM SLT/PST

Pop Vox featuring Craig Lyons

After several friends kept telling  me we had to get Craig Lyons to our sim we did some field research and noticed he was right up in Pop Vox category. He has the right amount of RL music background combined with a huge SL following filling up sim after sim for each of his shows. Actually I first came to know about Craig after a good friend passed me a link to a musicvideo just aired on Youtube done by the very talented machinima maker Rysan Fall. All to say Craig fits our Pop Vox concept perfectly – to broaden the gap and awareness between RL and SL musicians. More on this show next week! Meanwhile check out Craigs MySpace.

June 7-9 “Making Sense of Virtual Worlds and User Driven Innovation” Seminar

Since 2008 I’ve been participating in some very cool virtual worlds research led by RUC (Roskilde University, Denmark).  Time is up for a global seminar including John Lester aka ex-Pathfinder Linden, Tom Boellstorff and many more interesting participants. The event will take place at a cool venue and 45+ attendees will join in from all over the world. And it gets even cooler. Tuesday June 8 a Metanomics Special will be broadcasted as a mixed reality show streamed from the RL venue back and forth into the SL TV studio and hosted by Robert Bloomfield aka Beyers Sellers. I will be rezzed behind the soundmixer and try make sure all the audio is set. Luckily I’ll be guided by the technical wizz from university as well as by our  longtime partners- and friends at Treet.TV. We will make it! Also a short PAL presentation during seminar is scheduled and I expect all the PHds and professors will slice me up in pieces! However I will bounce back Monday evening where a party is planned and do the DJ thingy by using my SL DJ equipment (basicly a laptop) for the first time ever at a RL venue. Very exciting… hope to be able to stream it into our PAL sim as well so everyone can join and maybe see the fun!

Beside these two events the PAL roadmap includes a coming up “to be huge” Treet.TV Expo weekend which is currently in the making but still awaits final dates to be set. For this a Pop Vox showcase booth is under construction. Talking about builds we are also close getting our slot for a small showcase booth at the SL Solution Provider Exposition sims. And currently we’re taking notes on how we can improve our new simdesign on form and function as well.

And what more oh yes… we recieved a proposal on setting up an event based on sound/art installations. We’re looking for 7 skilled designers who would like to participate. This event is scheduled in about a month from now. Follow us here and inworld for updates or drop us a line if you wanna play!

Ok lastly I recently participated in a nice music roundtable led by Pete and Catherine Linden. Very exciting stuff and hope and wishes that Linden Labs PR strategy will work out well during 2010!

Summer ahead summerized

Categories: NewsAuthor: Claus Uriza

We are currently down for maintanance and let the music and data do the work! I’ll step into Metameets in Dublin and hope the ash Gods over Northern Europe behave. It’s all covered virtual so go SIGN up and spent friday and saturday all morphed into “Whats New” in the continueing development of the beast entitled 3D web (we still need a better name).

Although 2nd Q not over yet PAL will spend comings months (sunbathing) moving our new sim design ahead in form and function. This process is scheduled due to summer and the reduced virtual living in Europe and partly US.

Right now and coming weeks:

Saturday noon EST the Metameets confrence have panels devoted to Digital Media and Music. The music panel consists of Daniel Hruschka, Elfay Pinkdot, Slim Warrior and me.

Pop Art Lab will launch a weekly session called BEATS! where we’ll focus on the “Now Sounds” and invite DJs in to collaborate.

June 7-9th:
Danish research project “Sense-making strategies and user-driven innovaton in virtual worlds” (love that title) host a very exciting 3 days seminar with 45+ participants from around the globe. Follow their blog for updates.

Claus Uriza CEO of ‘POP AT LAB’ said:
“We have made lots of progress at PAL over the past year so to celebrate our new sim launch I wanted to involve a lot of live musicians. Then came the idea of documenting the old sim design through a machinima contest, inspired by the recent MMIF. I met so many talented people through the MMIF I wanted their input at PAL too. The addition of some very experienced and cool speakers will add value and diversity to this event and help to connect with the audience. In the future, I hope PAL will grow alongside Second Life and we plan on expanding our presence on the web in general including our new website.”

Persia Bravin-Press Manager said:
“The whole team at POP ART LAB comprises some of the most experienced people within any virtual world in their chosen field. We have taken this experience and made PAL a virtual force to be reckoned with. The convergence of art, machinima and guest speakers-plus the music which PAL is most famous for-emphasizes our drive to be the most innovative, collaborative and social virtual music platform in existence!”
