Updates from the Lab (or lack of!)
Wish we could air more details on our upcoming Emma Acs Machinima event but by now there’s too many unsolved ends!
First of all we are trying to mingle out a date. It ain’t easy as June is full of cool events. We have Chantal Harveys MMIF Int. Machinima Festival, MetaMeets Confrence in Amsterdam, SL8B (the official Second Life 8 years birthday) just to mention a few.
Submission deadline for incoming Emma Acs musicvideos ends June 12th. Then we need at least another week to find the winning machinima. Then the weekends are booked!
All to say it’s unclear whether we’ll boost our event right into the SL8B weekend or wait untill the very beginning of July.
Next we have to decide guidelines for jury if there’ll be a jury! I put it that way as our recent Giana Factory contest showed the complexity of having on one hand a jury consisting of real life director, SL director, a Linden plus on the other, the 3 three girls in Giana Factory. Finally me trying to make everyone satisfied. Not to mention a lot of experts who briefed behind the scenes!
This is in NO way a critique of recent jury they did an absolutely awesome job! But it might be confusing if let’s say the artists in this case Emma Acs & The Inbred Family plus their manager for some reason fall in love with video not as high ranked by the jury!
Let’s see.. ofcourse there’ll be some kind of jury.
This leads me to an interesting point. Somehow I think there could be a minor gap between what the machinima community likes compared to what non-SL’ers and non-virtual people likes.
Anyway running these contests have an overall goal – to push machinima out of the box and into the public outside virtual worlds. And well first of all to come up with a video the musician(s) likes.
However it should be stated our Giana Factory contest only had one winner but actually the jury, the band and everyone involved ended up with two winners. But we only had one prize!
I have recieved an email blaiming us for finding winner 20 mins before announcements and doing a not so pro judgement.
To this I can only say it was a 1-1 situation (jury and band spent 2 weeks prior to evaluate videos) and I skyped with Giana Factory (last minute) who by the way was located three diffrent places on the globe (and were extremely busy).
And they made their final vote on FuzOnAcid although they liked Arbit Delacroix work as much (You can go watch and read about both at Hamlet Aus New World Notes blog).
Despite I am aware and grateful of the huge amount of work all the makers put into their videos we have to remember our jury and the band also did their best and invested their efforts and time helping out here. And so did everyone involved in the setup, designers, Treet.TV, scripters, PAL crew and so on!
At the end of the day I believe we all learn and move on if we are able to communicate openly in a transparent way (and above info is one way!).
Back on track. We expect 5-10 Emma Acs musicvideos coming in before submisison ends Sunday midnight California time!
I have cleaned up and re-designed our Pop Art Lab YouTube channel and all entries will be added as they occur.
Also I’ve been in close contact with Emma and her manager and they appreciate and support the rollout.
Emma Acs is extremely busy and currently making lots of concerts, interviews, DJ’in etc. etc.! It’s safe to say she is one of the most “wanted” artists in Denmark right now and needless to say the media is ALL over her.
She has just been added to Roskilde Festival programme which is by far the biggest festival in Scandinavia if not Europe!
Please consider to show her and the band your support and visit their sites at Facebook, or the .com site
Ok now to some basic PAL updates!
We are slowly rendering into summerholiday mode and will try remain pretty lowkey till coming autumn.
A new Pop Art Lab is under construction although it’s in a very early (G doc) stage!
During short meeting with PALs ace designer and partner Emily Hifeng we focused on one of the most important aspects of our SL presence – it has to be fun!
No deadlines no nothing but hopefully we are able to launch start or bit into 2012!

A lot of great points. Especially about the judging system. I think it’s great to have a diverse bunch but like you said the ultimate judge is the band. I agree that there was two winners with one prize with fortunately me being the recipient
. I chatted quite a bit with Arbit and he basically ran out of time or he possibly would have been the winner. I was very impressed by his work and it has inspired me to do some things differently which is the whole point of this exercise. Getting as many people involved and exchanging ideas. Emma Acs looks like a very hot property at the moment and possibly both SL and the band can benefit.
Cheerio
