Pop Art Lab & Art Breaker in the Skylight

Categories: Art Breaker, NewsTags: , , , , Author:

As previously announced Pop Art Lab will participate in the Linden Lab Skylight test (Second Life in a browser).
Therefore we have decided to extend our Art Breaker exhibition few more weeks. Test period starts on or around November 8. and last 2 weeks.
Whatever happens during this test we think Art Breaker is all the worth to keep up for this.

Few days ago the first test “guest” account visited the lab.
There have been a lot of rumours circulating the blogosphere previous weeks. First of all nothing in this test have been hidden as LL posted inworld notecards to a number of landowners without NDA. Secondly according to LL they fully expected the news to spread. Lastly it is a test and far too early to evaluate or draw any conclusions.
We already had a debate on Twitter whether SL in a browser was a good idea hmm some 3-6 months ago. And I still believe it makes a lot of sense. Sometimes we have to forget inworld issues and start think about what’s been urgent in SL for years. More people! Think about how cool it is the whole web can look at your creations in a very easy way. How cool it is if you can run a class and show your students cool places without having to deal with port and firewall issues. Or when you go meet clients you don’t have to worry about their firewall or bandwidth. Or if you host an event where only 3-5 percent actually needs to rezz anything (by the way we never allow rezz at our events anyway).
Ofcourse we expect bugs and troubleshooting throughout the coming months or year.

Here’s the FAQ. Visitors using browser will have a “guest” tag.

FAQ:

System and Access:

Q: What are the system requirements?

A: The web experience can be accessed from PCs running Windows XP or Windows 7 using Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Chrome and Mac O/S X using Safari, Firefox, or Chrome. Access to the experience will also require a broadband internet connection — we’ll be testing various connection speeds during the test.

Q: How does a guest access the experience?

A: During the test, a select number of participants will be presented with the option of accessing a web-based version of Second Life. For those guests, a link will be displayed that can be used to launch Second Life inside their browser.

Q: Is this open to existing Second Life Residents?

A: Any existing Second Life Resident has the potential to access this test. However, only a small number of participants will be exposed to the link needed to access this test.

Q: Can an existing Resident login with their SL account?

A: No. This test aims to validate access options with potential new Residents and, thus, there is no option to login with an existing Second Life account. Participants will appear as guests and will not have the option to use an existing username or to define a new username during their visit.

Q: Is this going to replace the Viewer?

A: No. This test is not meant to compete with or replace the existing Second Life Viewer. Depending on what we learn from our testing, we may ultimately pursue some or none of these approaches, and your help with this test can help us to determine if this approach should be part of Second Life’s future.

Q: How long will this test be conducted?

A: This test is currently planned to begin on or around Nov. 8 and will run approximately two weeks. However, Linden Lab may extend or shorten the duration of this test in reaction to our early findings.

Destinations:

Q: How are the destinations selected?

A: In order to introduce the best Second Life experience to potential new Residents, Linden Lab has selected a small sample of locations that demonstrate some of the most interesting, entertaining, and popular types of Resident-created content. Test participants will only have access to limited features and interactivity, so Linden Lab aimed to omit locations that rely on features not supported in this version (such as HUDs, etc.).

Locations were selected from the wider Destination Guide, which also factors in a venue’s popularity, appeal and overall quality. More information on general Destination Guide criteria can be found on the Second Like Wiki (http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Destination_Guide).

Q: Can test participants teleport to all existing Second Life location?

A: No. Test participants will only be able to teleport to the set of locations listed in a streamlined version of the Destination Guide. They cannot respond to teleport requests sent from residents or to SLURLs posted into chat.

User Capabilities:

Q: Will the test participants be distinguishable from existing residents?

A: Yes. Each guest will have a temporary username that distinguishes their “guest” status. All guests will be identifiable through use of a common naming protocol.

Q: Can they buy items in Second Life or in the Marketplace?

A: No. Test participants can not give or receive L$ and cannot have inventory.

Q: Can they change avatar appearance?

A: As they begin each session, test participants will be able to select from several introductory looks. They will be able to change between the available looks at any time during the session. However, since they will not have inventory, further avatar customization will not be possible.

Will their avatar and username be saved after the session ends?

Test participants will have a maximum of 60 minutes to explore and experience Second Life. However, the avatar and username information is not retained once that time has expired. Guests will have the option to download the full Second Life Viewer and register a unique username to continue their exploration, or they may return through the Web Viewer and initiate a new session.

Q: How many times can a guest visit through the web viewer?

A: There is no limitation on repeat visits during the test.

Q: Where do users go for help?

A: General Second Life questions and troubleshooting can be found in the Support section of the Secondlife.com website. (http://secondlife.com/support/)

Interactions with Residents:

Q: Will users be able to IM(chat) with other test participants and Residents?

A: Participants will be able to use text chat with all Residents. Guests will be unable to hear or initiate voice chat.

Q: What happens if a Resident offers inventory or a notecard?

A: Test participants will not see any incoming inventory offers, including notecards. They are unable to receive, give or hold inventory.

Q: Can a Resident offer friendship to the users?

A: No. Friendships will not be supported in this test.

Landowners:

Q: How many people can we expect to visit our region?

A: At this time, Linden Lab cannot provide an exact estimate on the number of test users that participating landowners can expect. We estimate the total number of visitors to be less than 100 guests per region, over the length of the test. However, we will be monitoring closely the impact of our testing to ensure that there is minimal disruption to participating venues.

Q: What is being done to prevent region overload?

A: As part of the test, we plan to randomly rotate and feature different venues to better distribute exposure to all participants. Thus, not all test participants will see the same set of venues in the streamlined Destination Guide.

Q: Can a landowner choose to opt out of the beta test, after it has started?

A: Landowners can opt out of the test by sending a notecard to Blondin Linden.

Q: Is there a support contact if problems are encountered?

A: Landowners are encouraged to contact Blondin Linden if they have any questions or support issues related to this test.

Finally time for an update!

We passed a very successful launch of our Art Breaker exhibition. More than 1000 visitors stepped by during the weekend and that number is by far doubled now. Parts of the 12 hour opening event can be viewed at Treet.TV. Art Breaker was originally intended to run for 2 months endning start of November. However I managed to make a bummer in official poster that stated October 4th. Anyway it’ll be extended till November 5th!
Also Art Breaker is up in Editors’ Picks at secondlife.com site and we are proud of it! Go support it there
I want to sincerely thanks everyone who have participated and helped making Art Breaker such a fantastic and powerfull exhibition. As late of few days ago I witnessed major companies who brought in classes and gave tours there.
I am pretty sure you haven’t read the last word yet about Art Breaker as we will revamp it with events during October.

And now to the coming up section.

I’ll head to a confrence in Finland next week to make a presentaion about Music in Virtual Worlds and host a panel on Arts as well. This has been scheduled for long and the Finnish connection actually started few years ago when Kiana Writer (Founder of MadPea) hooked me up with Finnish edu sims. Since then I’ve went there twice virtually to give speak to students about Pop Art Lab and Entrepreneurship in virtual worlds. Now it’s time to visit for real.
October 7th I’ll make a 40 min presentation and after lunch I’ll host a 2+ hour Art panel direct from SL and projectored to screen at real confrence. The art panel will include three 30 min presentations by artists Misprint Thursday, Chantal Harvey and Gwenette Writer. We’ll send out inworld invites and hope we can get a thriving art debate during panel virtual and real.
Full schedule and info for “PAL in Finland” will be posted here coming days.

Our next announcement is a very exciting Pop Vox TV music show coming up November 1st. The show will be featuring head of Canadian project “Peace-Partners” as well as live concert by musicians related to the project.
“The adventure started in early 2009. Based on the twin ideals of Peace and Freedom, musician Patrick Lajeunesse founded a group on the music collaboration website of Indaba Music. As a result of those collaborations, around 60 artists from a dozen countries participated. Together, they created more than 40 songs.”
The peace project is non-profit and affilated with Amnesty International and Warchild, Canada.
We are looking much forward to do our very best to bring awareness to this great initiative.

Lastly we’ll continue to showcase Art Breaker and we gladly arrange guided tours up there. Just ping me and we can work out time/date. To visit Art Breaker teleport here!

Art Breaker – Artist Biographies

‘Art Breaker’ features the work of some of the best artists in any virtual world. We are privileged to have them work in partnership with us at POP ART LAB and look forward to future, shared creative opportunities.
If you want to know more about the participating artists, you can discover more from their biographies below.

Bryn Oh- Bryn’s interest in Second Life began with an attempt to create a virtual artist with no reference to a RL identity. The idea was to establish whether a pixel character could become popular and accepted as an artist in RL amongst the flesh and blood crowd. Bryn views what we do here as a new medium with the capability to create unique forms of art. Bryn began studying Psychology in University, and then became an associate of the Ontario College of Art and Design after studying in both Toronto and Florence, Italy. After that she continued with a degree in Softimage computer animation and Zbrush. Bryn makes her living as a professional oil painter. Her virtual work has been shown in a variety of venues ranging from Boston, Brooklyn and Amsterdam in RL to working with companies such as IBM and the Spanish government for the Worlds Expo Shanghai 2010. Publications vary from IBM to Art21, scholarly essays to blogs. (http://brynoh.blogspot.com/)

Sunn Thunders- Sunn is a digital artist, educator, and has been a Second Life resident since June 2006. His work mainly focuses on kinetic sculptures that emphasize cyclic motion, patterns, colors, and even sound. These sculptures are designed to engage the viewer in thoughtful contemplation. Sunn also takes pleasure in dabbling with shapes and forms that reflect the spirit and culture of the south-western United States. In addition to sculpture he enjoys creating digital imagery, which includes Second Life landscape photography, original abstract illustrations, and fractals. Sunn is also interested in images that capture and evoke rich colors and textures. His digital tools of choice include Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Blender, and Apophysis, all of which he continues to explore and learn. Second Life has unlocked Sunn’s creativity and launched him along a pathway of artistic discovery. He is grateful for the opportunity to share his artwork with others and appreciates the interest it creates. When not engaging in virtual realms, he enjoys losing himself in a good book or in his garden. Examples of his artistic adventures are on display at his gallery, across the metaverse, and on the internet.

Abstract Baroque- Abstract Baroque is a UK based sculptor who might be most known for his gorgeous light particle shows which take the grid by storm. Lately along with Merlino Mayo he took home the $L20,000 prizes for winning the inaugural Scien@Art Physics 2010 Competition (at University of Western Australia (UWA) campus in SL) which was designed to challenge Second Life residents to create 3D art objects incorporating Physics principles across a number of categories, Atom, String Theory, Nanotechnology, Big Bang, Electricity and Atom. Abstract is also a noted painter in his real life with an interest in eastern religion and spiritual thought.

Misprint Thursday- Misprint is an artist in both worlds, in any world in fact! Her work manifests in many forms including interactive art, sound, music, machinima, sculpture, drawing, painting, photography and performance. Her main interests include emotive narratives, visual and behavioural patterns, visual conceptions of modes of communication, modern and historic iconography and relation to the natural and built environment. She enjoys creating on a daily basis and remains hopeful and open to the collaborative possibilities of the digital and the real. Her work has been noted on wired.com, PBS Art21 Blog, IndabaMusic, as well as by academics and art historians. Misprint has a background in fine art. In her installation for Art Breaker, Misprint uses an original music collaboration called ‘Covered Me in Colors’. The instrumentals and musical arrangement are by professional composer and musician, Ulf Skogsbergh. The original vocals and lyrics are by Misprint Thursday. Misprint and Ulf collaborate digitally on Indaba Music.

Miso Susanowa-Miso came to Second Life to see what had happened in the digiverse since 1995, when she began working in VRML virtual worlds. A musician/composer and artist in First Life, Miso’s SL sculptural work incorporates her experience with music and performance art production while attempting to continue her exploration of the burgeoning multiverse, its capabilities and potentials for transforming vision and creating new paradigms of relationship, behavior and identity. She is proud to be “old skool” in her identification as a netizen, a citizen of cyberspace. Her installation for Art Breaker, ‘code dreams’, is a dialogue addressing the digital/physical reality question; at one level it is both a still-life and a spacial soundscape with interactive and static elements (the Macrocosm), and on a closer examination made up only of bits and bytes, amino acids, pixels and light (the Microcosm). (http://gomiso.blogspot.com)

Binary Quandry- Binary Quandry is a Second Life artist. The work he does is primarily based on interaction or reaction to avatars. In Binary’s art, the avatar becomes an abstract reflection of the avatar. Every avatar in Second Life has a unique number (Universal Unique IDentifier), the avatar key or UUID, much like a finger print in the physical world. He uses the avatar key in such a way that each avatar becomes a part of the artwork. Artworks he has created include abstract images and sculptures and the use of sensors or collision detection. By your very presence, you are making the art unique.

Sabrinaa Nightfire- Sabrinaa has been an artist all her life. She’s from the eastern part of the United States and currently lives in Florida. She loves playing with intensely saturated colors, spatial relationships and new art forms. From the day she got her first computer in the 1980s, she started creating art with it. Her mother is an artist and her father worked in broadcasting and photography for over fifty years so she grew up with many forms of artistic expression at her disposal. As a child, she participated in many art programs for the artistically gifted. She also taught video production for twelve years. In 2001, she began creating art full time. In Second Life, she’s a sculptor, builder, clothes maker and photographer. She has an art sim, Erato of Caerleon which is part of the Caerleon Art group. She also maintains a large gallery called Evolution. Learning new things, defying the laws of real life physics, thinking outside the box and collaborating with others are activities she delights in doing and she is constantly adding to her repertoire of skills and tools. Sabrinaa has created thousands of textures using Photoshop, ArtRage, Print Shop, Sculpt Studio and Tatara in addition, she is a passionate collector of scripts and scripting technologies. During her tenure as a teacher at the SL based New Caerleon University, she has taught basic building and also participated in various in world festivals including ‘Imagine’ and was also responsible for organizing an exhibit for the Human Rights Festival in SL, special events and exhibits for the Caerleon group of artists including the One Prim Wonder show, the Masks! Show, the Future Project, the Imagine Create Texture Challenge, Steaming Hot! , The Imagine Create No Texture Challenge and fashion shows with other artist/designers. Recently, she was also awarded an honourable mention for her piece entitled Turbulence in the UWA Imagine Challenge for 3D art.

Sledge Roffo- Sledge is famed for creating prim sculptures and then making use of the Second Life camera to zoom into the sculptures to capture abstract images- no Photoshop used. In August 2008, he named this process ‘Primagery.’ Sledge doesn’t limit himself to SL photography but also creates scripted sculptures and immersive exhibits and regularly collaborates with his partner, Jewel MacMoragh, including the build at SL7B, entitled ‘Confetti Cannon’. In his first life, Sledge is a career Construction Project Manager who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Painting. His blog speaks of the evolution of his work and the art and artists that influence it. Since his first solo exhibition in December of 2008, he averages two art shows per month and has permanent and rotating exhibits in several places in Second Life. His work in Burning Life 2009 ‘The Cambrian Explosion’ was featured on the Linden Blog as part of the opening ceremonies. (http://www.makingartinsecondlife.blogspot.com/)

About POP ART LAB

Pop Art Lab introduction – Present in Second Life since Sept. 2008, Pop Art Lab is a virtual music venue, aiming at bringing real life music industry into Second Life thanks to three major actions:

1.Promoting music by broadcasting brand new music in-world. Four full CDs are constantly played inside the venue and are changed on a bi weekly basis. This allows visitors to listen to the latest releases, sometimes even before they are actually available in their countries and stay tuned to music industry news.

2. Supporting singers and musicians who want to break into Second Life by organizing concerts and TV shows. Pop Art Lab regularly hosts in-world concerts, inviting performers to play in front of a virtual audience. Pop Art Lab also hosts TV shows, where musicians are interviewed before playing their songs. This show is made in partnership with Treet TV and has included artists like Greg Hawkes (The Cars) and Max Morgan http://treet.tv/shows/popvox.

3. Pioneering the collaboration between real world major music companies and Second Life activities.

Pop Art Lab also sets standards in virtual venues design, giving its visitors a unique experience. Taking advantage of Second Life technical abilities, the place has nothing in common with real life – being there is being in your fantasy land!
